STYKKER FOR LEIRE
nordisk gruppeutstilling 16.11 – 15.12.2024
Medvirkende er keramikerne Karin Blomgren (SE), Nynne Hoe (DK), Manuel Canu (DK/ IT), Jens Erland (NO) og Toril Redalen (NO), performancekunstner Kristina Junttila (NO/FIN), billedkunstner Kurt Johannessen (NO) og poet og performancekunstner Sara Falkstad (SE). Tittelen på prosjektet er inspirert av Fluxus-kunstner Yoko Onos; STYKKER FOR ORKESTER, 1963.
STYKKER FOR LEIRE er et pågående fellesrelasjonelt verk og et kollektivt utstillingsprosjekt utviklet av de nordiske kunstnerne i samarbeid med Kunsthall Grenland. Prosjektet startet opp i 2021, og til utstillingen har deltagerne også produsert en publikasjon som utgjør både et individuelt verk og en vei inn i utstillingen.
Utstillingen tar utgangspunkt i det tverrkunstneriske fenomenet Fluxus og dets utbredelse i Skandinavia. Prosjektet utforsker relasjoner mellom det materielle (materialet leire) og det kroppslige og performative, og er initiert av Toril Redalen.
Redalen skriver: Også arbeidet med leire har mye av det performative i seg, f.eks gjennom det håndborne. Overgangen fra prosess til resultat er ikke alltid tydelig, og et undersøkelsesaspekt. Fluxus forstås som et kunsthistorisk fenomen, ofte forklart som en kollektiv selvmotsigelse. Bevegelsens kompleksitet og inkluderende form, gjør det vanskelig å beskrive strømningen som lineært og avgrenset. Mer enn seks tiår etter at den dukket opp, er det fortsatt aktuelt å se på FLUXUS sin betydning, i forhold til samtidskunst og kuratering i dag.
Utstillingen blir til i en ti dagers kollektiv monteringsprosess – hvor publikum inviteres inn underveis. Utstillingen er sånn sett bevegelig og i endring; internt gjennom deltagernes interaksjon med hverandres verk – og eksternt gjennom publikums interagering. Et spørsmål som stilles, er i hvilken grad vi påvirkes av våre omgivelser; og hvordan forestillinger om makt og frihet beveger seg gjennom handling. Fluxus-kunst kunne og kan enda virke latterlig, men det innebar også en bevegelse mot hard makt og en undersøkelse av økologi i relasjon til mennesket og det naturlige miljøet. Svært mye av dagens kultur kjennetegnes av kulturelle uttrykk frigjort fra sin kontekst. Hvordan vi navigerer mellom det tenkte og det stofflige, hvem eller hva som styrer våre handlinger er mer aktuelt enn noen gang. Det menneskelige ytrings- og bevegelsesrommet er under stadig press.
Fluxusbevegelsens metode og mentalitet var også utgangspunkt for eksperimentering på kunsthallens verksted 1400° november 2023. Resultatene som oppstod under gruppas workshop, utgjør en substans, en form for «grunnmateriale» for utforming av utstillingen. Ved hjelp av introduksjoner, presentasjoner, fellesøvelser og arbeid med leire, har gruppa arbeidet frem en form for kollektiv signatur.
BIO
Jens Erland NO (b.1945)
Erland lives and works in Bryne, Norway. He is concerned with the interaction between light and
shadow, time and life cycles—in an existential sense. A number of tensions are activated in his works: historically between what is found and what is being made now, formally between
precision and randomness. Physically between different materials and different production
methods. His works are characterized by his interest in themes of time and life cycles, the
interplay between light and darkness, remnants of industry, everything that falls under the
concept of transition. Rhythm, flow, and repetition are important elements in his art. Jens
Erland’s works can best be described through materiality and circularity. www.erlandart.com
Karin Blomgren (b.1987)
Karin Blomgren delves into clay and other ephemeral materials, which she combines with an
exploration of space and physicality. Her works often emphasize the body’s smallness and
fragility in relation to the outsiders would are often emphasized through the use of large
volumes and the effect of gravity on various materials, such as wet clay. In collaboration with the Icelandic artist Erna E. Skúladóttir, she has made her mark with several monumental installations since 2015. Their work is known for incorporating impulses from the surrounding landscape and its geology, the local history and the site’s architectural features.
Kristina Junttila NO/FIN (b.1977)
Kristina Junttila is a performance artist and director. Kristina has been especially interested in the unpredictable, participation, cocreation, exercises and event scores. Kristina holds a MA in Live Art from the Theatre Academy in Helsinki and a PhD in art pedagogy from the Art Academy in Tromsø. Today she lives in Tromsø, where she is part of the performance group Ferske Scener. www.kristinajunttila.com
Kurt Johannessen NO (b.1960)
Kurt Johannessen works mainly with performance, and artists books. He has performed in
Europe, Asia and America since the early 80’s. His performance often has a poetic and minimalist expression. He works with text and publishes his own artist books. The text works are often short visual, poetic, and sometimes contain humour. He has produced more than 130 books. Since 2013, many of his books (About Something/Om-noko) have been the basis for a series of performance lectures. Manuel Canu IT/DK (b.1979)
Manuel Canu is a visual artist and works sculpturally with the ceramic medium. Ascribing himself to the decorative craftsman tradition, he investigates new interpretations of clay, used as a
decorative and architectural medium in a contemporary context. Canus installations and
sculptural ceramics serve as a visual narrative, paying homage to the echoes of the past while resonating with the demands of the present moment. Through mythic storytelling and the
exploration of transient beauty, Canu invites contemplation on the intricate interplay between humanity, nature, and the spiritual realm. www.manuelcanu.com
Nynne Hoe DK (b.1976)
Nynne Hoe is a ceramic artist with an explorative approach to materiality and agency. Her
research is driven by a deep interest in wild clay and other materials dug up from the terrestrial surface of the planet. For STYKKER FOR LEIRE Nynne Hoe is centering her work around Porsgrunn and the local industrial/geological history of the area in an investigation of landform, local terrain history and human altering of the local landscapes. www.nynnehoe.com
Sara Falkstad SE (b.1982)
Sara Falkstad works with poetry and other text, performance and relational art and pedagogy. Her work often revolves around the relationship between humanity and the rest of nature, life stories and women’s history. She is part of feminist art collective OTALT and Kolonin, a platform for contemporary art in Arvika, Sweden. Sara Falkstad has a M.A. in Archaeology from Linnaeus University. sarafalkstad.com
Toril Redalen NO (b. 1973)
Toril Redalen is a ceramic artist/kunsthåndverker. She lives and works in Todalen/Trondheim. In her artistic practice, she is interested in materials themselves—where they come from and what they are a part of. Her interest in learning the specialized knowledge related to the material of a specific place is central to her artistic activity. This interest actually began in Porsgrunn, in the factory, through encounters with both the former workers of the porcelain factory and those who continue to shape Grenland’s cultural story within the art field. In several projects, such as STYKKER FOR LEIRE/PIECES FOR CLAY, she explores the work with clay to a Fluxus mindset.
