ARVEN grows out of a collaborative project around Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik’s old casting moulds — a body of material now held in storage at Hadeland Glassverk. In the spring and autumn of 2025, Kunsthall Grenland and the workshop 1400 ran two workshops in which artists worked with plaster, casting moulds and casting slip: taking impressions, copying, reworking and reassembling anew.
“You set your foot down in wet sand and it leaves an impression. I fill that impression with plaster and I’ve cast myself a copy” — this is how Martin Woll Godal describes the essence of working with casting. The copy can be reworked, modified and combined with others, or left to stand alone: a memory of an action that has taken the form of a storytelling object.

The factory’s old casting moulds have long been a sought-after “material” for artists and craftspeople with an interest in industrial production. For industrial designers and ceramicists, working with plaster, casting moulds and casting slip is a fundamental and essential technique. In 2017–18, the artist Torbjørn Kvasbø cast the work «Vaseklase» at 1400 — more than 3,000 vase forms drawn from the factory’s long history, later shown in both Paris and Seoul.
